[T1] Diagnosing Tape Retraction Issues

Although tape retraction issues are rare, you can follow these steps to determine if your T1 is experiencing this problem:

Steps:

  1. Check Tape Extension
    • Attempt to extend the tape.
    • If the tape cannot be extended, proceed with the following steps.
  2. Remove the Optical Reader Module (Full guide available here)
    • Unscrew the 2 screws of the Reader Module that are on the bottom of the device.
    • Slide out the Reader Module (chinstrap removal not required).
    • Unclip the top wiper portion of the Reader Module.
    • Unsnap the Autolock Housing and fully remove the RM from the tape.
  3. Test Tape Retraction
    • Check if the tape extends and retracts properly now.

Diagnosis:

  • If retraction works after removing the Reader Module: Replace the Optical Reader Module (RM). Please reach out to contact@reekon.tools, and we’d be more than happy to provide you with a replacement.
  • If retraction still does not work: Please contact us at contact@reekon.tools, and we can help with the next steps.

  • I fixed the tape retraction problem on my T1.  It would only weakly retract to 25 inches and then I had to push the tape the rest of the way in.  So, I started by removing the optical reader from the tape, and then went to the garage so I could pull the tape out to 25 ft.  Then I took my compressed air nozzle from my compressor and blew in on top of the tape expecting for lots of dust etc to fly out.  No dust, but as I blew, I noticed a small black piece moving around in there.  I reached my finger in the tape feed opening and found the little black piece was free floating and I dragged it out.  Turns out it was the tape retension part from the optical reader.  I then let the tape retract and it went all the way in.  After putting the optical reader back on the tape, I reattached the formerly loose curved tape retension part to the optical reader, and pushed the optical reader back into the tape opening and tightened the 2 screws on the bottom.  NOW THE TAPE GOES BACK IN EVERY TIME AND AS A BONUS, THE OPTICAL READER STARTS READING IMMEDIATELY WHEN i TURN ON THE T1.  Hurray.  GL
