No, the T1 Tomahawk will work completely on its own, and is a fully functional digital tape measure independent of any apps or smartphone. 

The ROCK Jobsite App, while not required, enhances the functionality of the tool and provides a multitude of additional benefits such as measurement sharing, firmware upgrading, and integrated construction calculators.
